Indian Engineering Services Exam (IES)

The Indian Engineering Services exam (IES) is an entrance examination conducted by the union public service commission (UPSC) for recruiting eligible candidates to the civil services posts in the core technical departments or public sectors including Railways, Roads, Power Supply, Telecommunications, Defense, Manufacturing, etc. Thus, the Indian Engineering Services (IES) comprises of Group A Gazetted post in various departments of the central government of India.

The engineering graduates who are interested in serving the country through IES should apply for Indian Engineering Services IES 2016 entrance exam. The IES exam is one of the toughest exam in the country as per the selection ratio which is 0.00275 (based on 2010 statistics) and because of its technical nature.

Nature of the Exam and Selection Process

Candidates interested in the Indian Engineering Services have to undergo Engineering Services Examination (ESE) conducted by UPSC every year. The Notification and the online application are released in the month of February. The candidates are selected on the basis of written examination and interview process.

Application/Notification

Eligibility for IES

Candidates have to meets all the eligibility requirements as laid down by the UPSC. The eligibility requirements are:

Age Limit

The candidates must be minimum 21 years of age as on the 1st January of the year of the IES exam. The upper age limit for the candidates is less than 30 years i.e. the candidates must no attain 30 years of age before 1st January of the year of the Engineering Services exam.

The candidates of ST/ST/PH and OBC category are provided with the relaxation in the upper age limit as per the reservation norms of the central government.

Nationality

The Candidate must be a citizen of:

  • India
  • A citizen of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan
  • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Educational Requirements

The candidate must hold a engineering degree from a recognized institute or university established by the norms fulfilled by UGC.

Application form and Notification

The application form and the notification for the  Indian Engineering Services exam (IES) exams are announced in the month of February, interested candidates can apply online through the UPSC website. The application fees for the IES form is Rs 200 for General and OBC candidates, while the ST/SC/Female and PH candidates need not to pay any application fee.

Exam Pattern

The Engineering Services exam pattern consist of 5 papers, out of which Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3 are objective type whereas Paper 4 and Paper 5 are conventional type, after qualifying all the exams candidates are called for interview.

The duration of the IES exam is 3 days, on the first day Paper 1 is conducted which is a General Ability (GA) test, the time duration for the exam is 2 hours. On the 2nd day Paper 2 and Paper 2 are conducted which are objective technical papers, their time duration is also 2 hours for each.

On the 3rd day the Paper 4 and Paper are conducted which are subjective technical papers, the time duration for these exams are 3 hours.

Thus, the written papers comprises of total 1000 marks, 200 marks for each paper and the final stage is of Personality Test which is a interview of 200 marks.

The final merit of the successful candidates is prepared on the basis of written test and Interview.
