UPSC will organize IES Preliminary Exam 2020 on 5th January 2020. IES or ESE (Indian Engineering Services or Engineering Services Examination ) exam also known as ESE (Engineering Services Examination) is an entrance test conducted every year.

Through this exam various civil servants are recruited by Govt. of India. Eligible candidates successfully qualifying the exam gets recruited in various services under various categories – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. The number of vacancies to be filled are expected approximately 581. Reservation will be provided for the candidates belonging to ST, SC, OBC, PWD candidates as decided by Govt. of India. Also the vacancies are distributed as under:

IES Salary

The basic pay scale for IES 2020 salary at entry level is around INR 15,600 – INR 39,100. The pay scale increases as the levels and time duration increases. Also, candidates enjoy various allowances (Travel/Dearness/Transport, etc) along with salary.

IES 2020 Application Form

UPSC IES 2020 application process will start from 25th September 2020. Candidates will be able to register till 15th October 2020. Applying candidates must ensure that they fulfill eligibility before applying. Complete registration process will be done in online mode.

Also, candidates can withdraw their application till first week of November 2020 in case they do not want to appear for the exam. Students have to register using their valid photo id proof.

Application Fee:

  • Application Fee is Rs.200.
  • All Females/ST/SC/PH candidates are exempted to pay fee.

Payment Mode: Application fee can be paid online (Net banking/Debit card/Credit card). Through offline mode, fee can be paid by depositing cash at any SBI branch.

IES 2020 Eligibility Criteria & Qualification

  • Nationality:
    • Applicants should be an Indian citizen or subject of Bhutan/Nepal or Tibetan refugee who have migrated to India before 1st January 1962, with the intention of permanent settlement in India.
    • Candidates of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire, Zambia & Vietnam for permanent settlement in India are also eligible.
    • Candidates subject of above mentioned countries / migrated candidates must have a certificate of eligibility issued by Govt. of India.
  • IES Age Criteria:
    • Applying candidate minimum age limit should be 21 years and maximum age limit should be 30 years. He/she must have not been born earlier than 2nd January, 1990 and not later than 1st January, 1999.
    • Age relaxation upto 35 years will be granted to Govt. servants of various categories.
  • IES 2020 Educational Qualifications:
    • Applying candidate must have Engineering degree from a recognized University OR
    • Must have Engineering degree/diploma from foreign University/Institute/ College recognized by Govt. of India OR
    • Passed Section A & B of the Institution Examinations of the Institutions of Engineers (India) OR
    • Should have passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India) OR
    • Must have passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959 OR
    • Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II & III / Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India OR
    • For Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts and Engineer Group A in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organization) should possess any of the above qualifications OR M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Electronics, Radio Engineering, Radio Physics or Wireless Communication as a special subject.
  • Medical Examination:
    • Candidates must qualify the medical examination conducted by the authority.
  • Physical Standards:
    • Candidate must be physically fit as per the physical standards mentioned.

IES Exam Pattern

To get selected in IES exam 2020, candidates have to first qualify preliminary exam and then qualified candidates will be eligible for mains exam and interview round. Go through pattern of prelims and mains exam of IES 2020 below:

Stage I: For Preliminary Exam:

  • Exam mode – The written test (prelims) will be held in offline mode (Pen & paper mode).
  • No. of papers -There will be 2 papers – Paper I (General Studies) and Paper II (Engineering Discipline).
  • Marks – Exam will be of total 500 marks. Paper I will be of 200 marks and Paper II will be of 300 marks.
  • Questions Type – Multiple choice questions will be asked in the paper I.
  • Time Duration – 2 hours will be given for Paper I and 3 hours for Paper II, i.e. total 5 hours.
  • Marking: For each incorrect answer, 1/3rd of the assigned marks to the question will be reduced as penalty.

Stage II: Mains Exam

  • Exam type – The mains paper will be held in written (offline) mode and will be conventional type.
  • No of papers -There will be two papers in mains which will consist of questions from Engineering disciplines (Civil / Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics & Telecommunication.
  • Marks – Both the papers will be of 300 marks each. Total the mains exam will be of 600 marks.
  • Time Duration – 3 hours will be given for solving each paper.

  • After prelims and mains, personality test/interview is the final stage.
  • Personality Test will be of total 200 marks.
  • In this stage, candidate’s various skills are accessed like Mental alertness & Mental caliber, Suitability of candidate for a career in public service sector, Mental & Physical energy, Leadership Qualities, etc.

IES 2020 Recruitment /Selection process

Students are required to qualify the below mentioned stages to get qualified in UPSC IES exam 2020:

  • Stage I – IES Preliminary Exam
    • In the prelims exam, questions will be from General Studies & Engineering Aptitude in Paper 1 and from respective engineering disciplines in Paper 2. Both Papers are to be qualified to get selected for next stage, i.e. Mains Exam.
  • Stage II – IES Mains Exam
    • In the mains exam, written test will be conducted with both the papers of engineering disciplines.
  • Stage III – Personality Test or Interview
    • After qualifying prelims and mains, interview / personality test will be conducted.

UPSC IES 2020 Admit Card

UPSC IES 2020 Admit card will be available for download in online mode. Candidates can download it in the month of November – December 2020. At the time of downloading admit card, candidates have to enter their login credentials.

Admit card is an important proof of successful registration of exam and is a proof which allows entry into the exam hall. Candidates facing any discrepancy while downloading the admit card, must contact the officials.

UPSC IES 2020 Result

UPSC IES 2020 Result will be announced by the officials online after few weeks of exams. Students after result declaration have to enter their login details to check results. The results are expected to get released in the fourth week of February 2020.

Also, results will be out, the interview or personality test will start. Only the candidates successfully clearing the Prelims and Mains exam will be considered eligible for next personality test / interview round. The results will be finally announced after completing the interview round in the month of September 2020.
